Painting cabinets requires a systematic approach to ensure a smooth and durable finish that can stand up to daily use. The process begins with removing the cabinet doors, drawers, and all hardware, including handles, hinges, and knobs. This step allows for a more thorough and precise paint job without any obstructions. Once the components are removed, the workspace is carefully prepared using tape, paper, and drop cloths to protect floors, countertops, and nearby surfaces from overspray and paint splatters. When it makes sense to do so, we will take the doors and drawers with us to our cabinet shop and refinished them off site. The next step is to thoroughly clean and degrease the cabinets to remove any oils, grease, or buildup, which is essential for the primer and paint to adhere properly. Each area is meticulously masked to create clean lines and keep dust and debris out of the freshly painted surfaces.

After cleaning, the cabinets are scuffed and sanded using fine-grit sandpaper to create a slightly rough surface for better primer adhesion. This step is crucial for achieving a long-lasting finish, as it helps the primer bond to the cabinet surfaces and prevents chipping or cracking. Following sanding, dust is removed with a vacuum and tack cloth to ensure a clean surface free of particles. The priming stage involves applying two coats of high-quality primer, allowing adequate drying time between each coat to ensure full coverage and block any stains or wood tannins from bleeding through. Once primed, a final coat of finish paint is carefully applied using a combination of brushes, rollers, or sprayers, depending on the desired finish. The result is a smooth, even coat that enhances the cabinets’ appearance and provides a durable, easy-to-clean surface. The doors and hardware are reinstalled or replaced after everything is fully cured, completing a transformation that leaves the cabinets looking finished and refreshed with a new kitchen feel.
